UpDown Meter works like this. First up, you have to access the Options menu and select a network adapter. Once you’ve done that, UpDown Meter will tell you how much data is being uploaded and downloaded through that adapter. This information is presented as scrolling image on UpDown Meter’s interface and as a numerical value, also on UpDown Meter’s interface but also in the system tray.

UpDown Meter is available as an installer and as a portable version. The installer will install UpDown Meter on a Windows-powered PC. The portable version will run UpDown Meter without installing it. Just download a ZIP archive, extract its contents, and run the UpDown Meter executable.

The first time you run UpDown Meter, you have to tell it which network adapter you want it to monitor. To do this, you must access the Options menu, select the adapter, and then click OK or Apply. While you’re in the Options menu, consider if you want UpDown Meter to automatically run at startup and load minimized to the system tray.

UpDown Meter has a simple interface that isn’t difficult to figure out. The main panel is a scrolling graph that displays network activity and updates once per second. The numbers underneath display the current upload and download speed. And the buttons on the right hand side let you minimize the interface, make the interface transparent, clear the graph, and more.

The scrolling graph that’s presented on UpDown Meter’s interface uses color-coding: downloads are red, uploads re green, and downloads or uploads are yellow depending on which is lesser at that point in time. UpDown Meter’s system tray icon uses color coding as well, presenting uploads in green (at the top) and downloads in red (at the bottom).

UpDown Meter is free and open source software released under a GNU General Public License.

UpDown Meter doesn’t need a lot of resources to run. So let it sit there in the system tray, monitor your network card, and graph the network activity.

Pros

UpDown Meter is available as an installer and as a portable version. You can set it so UpDown Meter automatically runs at startup. UpDown Meter monitors the network adapter you select and displays a scrolling network activity graph on its interface. UpDown Meter’s animated tray icon presents information about network activity. UpDown Meter is free and open source software.

Cons

None that I could think of.
